History
Garden City Food Pantry was initially formed by members of the Garden City United Methodist Church in 1980. It was formed to address the needs of the Monroeville community and to make sure food was available for all in need. In 1980, Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas were going through a lot of change due to the decline of the steel industry. The unemployment rate was very high and many people found themselves either unemployed or under employed. It was a stressful time and several families were unable to provide food for their loved ones. It was out of that compassion and concern for others that the Garden City Food Pantry was formed. The food pantry has grown considerably in the past 40 years. However, the need to help provide people with food still remains.
